Tempus, an Eric Lefkofsky’s cancer fighting startup, plans on assisting doctors at the University of Chicago with data that will assist them in treating breast cancer patients better. Tempus publicized the partnership that will see the startup’s molecular analysis and sequencing provided to cancer specialists at UChicago. Tempus will analyze data collected from around 1,000 patients suffering from breast cancer. This will help researchers and doctors uncover the patterns that can help them predict how their patients react to the treatment administered.
Goals of the Partnership
Tempus stated that the goal of this partnership will be ensuring all its collected data helps in finding better treatment as well as improved outcomes. Dr. OlufunmilayoOlopade, the dean and professor of medicine and human genetics at the University of Chicago, stated that despite breast cancer being common, there is little data collected from the millions of people suffering from it. Dr. Olopade added that this fact leads to many physicians making treatment decisions without having the benefit of consulting specific genetic information. This information will help them make precisely targeted and informed decisions. He was excited by the new partnership as it would benefit both the startup and the university in advancing the knowledge they have to fight cancer. UChicago is the latest in a number of partnerships that Tempus has made with several research centers in its efforts to use data in combating cancer.
