Desiree Perez- A Woman Changing the Music Industry

Powerful positions in the music industry have been dominated by men for years. This trend however is beginning to take a huge turn. Recently Billboard made notice of this shift with their 2017 Women in Music list. The list, released in November, highlights some of the biggest negotiators, dealmakers and influencers in the business. More than one hundred women serving in a variety of positions made the list. One of the powerful women is Roc Nation’s COO- Desiree Perez.

Jay-Z’s right hand women for nearly two decades, Desiree Perez is responsible for huge events in recent music history. Most recently Perez helped Roc-Nation to secure a $100 million dollar investment from Sprint. The deal allowed Jay-Z to go platinum with his latest album 4:44, securing more than a million downloads before the album was even released. Perez work with Jay-Z also includes many hours working with his music streaming service TIDAL. Desiree Perez’s work goes beyond collaborating with Jay-Z. Perez has earned a reputation as a fierce negotiator. She is responsible for assembling Beyonce’s worldwide Formation stadium tour. The tour is one of the most successful in music history. Perez also helped singer Rihanna to negotiate a massive sponsorship with Samsung that earned her more than twenty-five million dollars. Most recently Perez honored Roc Nation’s ten year anniversary by securing a deal with Live Nation. Norka Luque’s Journey to Stardom

Norka Luque is a U.S. based musician of Venezuelan descent. She was discovered by Emilio Estefan Jr., one of the best music producers in America. She premiered into the music world with her first successful singe called “You Do” that was written by Archie Pena and produced by Emilio Estefan. The hit single got nominated for the Female pop artist of the year during the Premios Lo Nuestro awards.

Her second hit single, “Miracle,” from a similar tilted album was released in 2012. Again, the song was produced by Emilio Estefan. It was written by three talented composers namely Archie Pena, Luigi Giraldo and Hermanos Gaitan. It featured on the Latin Music Billboards throughout the year.

The song was composed of several native sounds including Mediterranean traces, reggae and Caribbean sounds. It became Norka’s biggest hit to date and a fan-favorite in Puerto Rico, Venezuela and the United States. It was later produced in several other versions with its salsa version remaining on top of the Venezuelan Record Report for 14 weeks. Its dance version done by DJ Ralphi became number 11 on Billboard Dance Club.

Norka’s Background

Norka Luque was born in the Venezuelan city of Caracas on February 7. Her full name is Norka Dubrazka Caracas Soraya Martinez Luque. When she started her singing career, she shortened her name to Norka for simplicity. She has categorically stated that she fell in love with music as a young girl and participated in many competitions. Her parents supported her by paying for her musical training. She enrolled in several classes including voice practice, ballet, piano and Flamenco.

After graduating high school, Norka was sent to France for her undergraduate studies. She studied International Business Administration. While in the country, she got a chance to pursue her first love when she joined the Bad Moon Rising, Funk and Rock band. She became a soloist for the band before returning to the United States to study culinary arts and fashion.

She met producer Emilio Estefan at the Crescent Moon Studios. He liked her music and asked to work with her to improve her sound. Together, they selected songs for her album titled “Miracle.” Emilio asked her to continue her singing lessons to improve her vocals. Norka has reiterated that she is happy working with Emilio Estefan because, according to her, he listens to her input. Today, Norka lives a healthy life by doing regular exercises, playing tennis and eating right.
